Settle market, Settle to Carlise railway, three peaks, loads of walks Three Peaks
The Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk is a very demanding but rewarding walk, which takes in the summits of Pen-y-ghent (694 metres - 2,276 feet), Whernside (736 metres - 2,415 feet) and Ingleborough (723 metres 2,372 feet) all in one circular route. There is no set starting point, but the vast majority of walkers start at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, taking in the summits in the order shown above. The walk is 24.5 miles (39.2km) long and takes in over 5,000 feet (1,600 metres). Malham CoveMalham Cove is a huge amphitheatre shaped cliff formation of limestone rock. The vertical face of the cliff is about 260 feet high. The top of the cove is a large area of deeply eroded limestone pavement, of a strange pattern rarely seen in England. The majesty of Malham Cove looks out over the Village of Malham and has been attracting visitors for centuries.
Gordale ScarGordale Scar is a huge gorge which was created during the Ice ages, melting water created a cavern that eventually collapsed to create the waterfall and gorge you see today. A waterfall flows down through the scar and you can climb up on the dry left hand side with the exception of after heavy rainfall when access is limited but the waterfall becomes even more spectacular. Ingleton fallsThe famous Waterfalls Trail has some of the most spectacular waterfall and woodland scenery in the North of England. The trail is 4.5 miles/8 kilometres through ancient oak woodland and magnificent Dales scenery via a series of spectacular waterfalls and geological features, rare and interesting plants and animals. The Waterfalls Trail has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England. AreaLong Preston is on the A65 road and lies in the Yorkshire Dales National Park near to the thriving market towns of Skipton (Gateway to the Dales) and Kirkby Lonsdale and is less than an hours drive from the Lake District. The village itself boasts two excellent pubs with first rate cuisine. It is an ideal centre for walking or touring holidays: open moorland, the hill slopes of the Pennines, caves and waterfalls are all within easy reach of the village. Sporting and leisure activities are catered for locally including walking, pony trekking, mountain climbing, cycling, pot holing, fishing and golf. Links |
